It is a city swallowed by the Mediterranean Sea and buried in sand and mud for more than 1,200 years. But now archeologists are unearthing the mysteries of Heracleion, uncovering amazingly well?preserved artifacts(手工艺品) that tell the story of an ancient port.

Known as Heracleion to the ancient Greeks and Thonis to the ancient Egyptians, the city was rediscovered in 2000 by French underwater archaeologist Dr. Franck Goddio and a team from the European Institute for Underwater Acheology (IEASM) after a four?year geophysical survey. The ruins of the lost city were found 30 feet under the surface of the Mediterranean Sea in Aboukir Bay, near Alexandria.

Many major discoveries were made at Thonis?Heracleion during a 13?year excavation(挖掘). Exciting archeological finds help describe an ancient city that was not only an important international trade center but possibly an important religious center.

Research now suggests that Thonis?Heracleion served as a busy trade port between the Mediterranean and the Nile.

So far, 64 ancient shipwrecks(失事船残骸)have been unearthed from the mud of the bay. Other findings include gold coins and weights(秤砣) from Athens (which have never before been found at an Egyptian site). Researchers have also uncovered a variety of religious artifacts in the sunken city, including 16?foot stone sculptures thought to have decorated the city's central temple.

Experts have wondered at the variety of artifacts found and have been equally impressed by how well preserved they are. Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe, a University of Oxford archeologist taking part in the excavation, said, “By lying untouched and protected by sand on the sea floor for centuries they are well preserved.”

But despite all the excitement over the excavation, one mystery about Thonis?Heracleion remains unsolved: How did it sink? Goddio's team suggests the weight of large buildings may have caused the city to sink in_the_wake_of an earthquake.

A. It has a history of about 1,200 years.

B. It was buried undersea for over 1,200 years.

While driving home from work, I always noticed an old man sitting by his front yard. He was usually *** oking or drinking and looked rather grumpy.

One day, while I was driving past him with my daughter, I decided to wave at him. Initially, when the old man noticed me waving at him, he looked a bit shocked. Then, I saw his hand go up and he waved back.

“Why did you wave at him?” my daughter asked. I told her that it's just an act of kindness that doesn't cost anything, and it gives both him and me a sense of joy. She responded by saying that she was a bit embarrassed to wave to a stranger, but next time she would try it as well.

Lucky for us, we live close to the old man, so we saw him rather often. Whenever we drove by, both of us would start waving at him and, pretty soon, the old man started waving at everyone who passed by his home. The old man, who used to be bad?tempered, now always wears *** iles on his face.

One day, my daughter's friend came to visit and she told my daughter that she saw this strange old man near our home who waved at her very kindly. She mentioned that she waved back at him, even though she didn't know him, and it felt really good.

Upon hearing this, my daughter told her friend the story of how all the waving began.

Her friend responded, “Tell your mom that's really cool!”

Inspired by all these positive ripples(涟漪), we decided to give our elder waving man a thank?you card, to express our gratitude for the warm feeling that he municates through his enthusiastic waves. And to thank him for sharing this simple joy with all who pass by his house.

This story teaches me just how much an act of kindness can be very natural and effortless, if you really want to do it. It shows us giving happiness benefits both the giver and receiver.

Sometimes it is a simple gesture that makes a big difference in someone's day.

The pregnancy(怀孕) progresses was normal for Karen. But plications arose during delivery(分娩). Finally, Michael's little sister was born. But she was in serious condition. With siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushed the infant to the intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital.

The little girl got worse. The doctor told the parents, “There is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst.” Karen and her hu *** and had fixed up a special room in their home for the new baby — now they planned a funeral.

Michael kept begging his parents to let him see his sister, “I want to sing to her,” he said. But kids are never allowed in Intensive Care. However, Karen made up her mind. She would take Michael whether they liked it or not. “If he doesn't see his sister now, he may never see her alive.” She dressed him in an oversized scrub suit and marched him into ICU. The head nurse recognized him as a child and bellowed, “Get that kid out of here now! ” The mother, the usually mild?mannered lady glared steel?eyed into the head nurse's face, her lips a firm line. “He is not leaving until he sings to his sister!” Karen towed Michael to his sister's bedside. He gazed at the tiny infant losing the battle to live. And he began to sing.

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray”.

Instantly the baby girl responded. The pulse rate became calm and steady.

“You never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away”.

The ragged, strained breathing became as *** ooth as a kitten's purr.

“Keep on singing, Michael”. Tears conquered the face of the bossy head nurse as well as Karen.

Funeral plans were scrapped. The next day — the very next day — the little girl was well enough to go home!

Unit 2

Ⅰ.1. 现在分词短语 go into the classroom 在这里作时间状语。

Smith与leave 之间构成主谓关系,故用leave 的现在分词形式 leaving, 此处相当于after he left his office, 故选C项。

5. D 考查分词作状语时,其逻辑主语是句子的主语,a sense of pride 并非see的执行者,故D正确。

还原句子even the *** all details of life should be considered in a gradual process可知定语从句与先行词之间用in,意为“在……的过程中” ,故用in which引导定语从句,which指代前面的process。

A项“专门的,特殊的”;B项“挑剔的”,be particular about “对……

在倍数之前还可用more than, over, less than等修饰语。

14. B pick out 挑选出; pick up 捡起,接某人。

15. A cut down 消减; cut off 切断; cut up 切碎; cut in 插嘴。

2. B 根据下文的how dependent we were on each other at that moment.

3. A bring one's life to a sudden end

6. B simply

B 1. and 2. that/which 3. into 4. without 5. in 6. to 7. on 8. what

由第一段的“A subordinate(下属) took the same pistol from Clive's hand and fired it six times in succession.”可知。

由最后一段的最后一句话“…Robert Todd Lincoln was the only man who was on the scene immediately after all the shootings.”

The manner in which fate saved Clive of India for his mission in history is a matter of record.

Ⅳ.1. Expectant.

2. To get ready for the worst result.

3. The baby recovered from the dangerous state of a gradually.

4. A miracle of love.

Ⅴ.One possible version:

March 22,2014, SaturdaySunny

Today is the 22nd World Water Day. In the morning, we had a class meeting to make preparations for the afternoon activities.

At 2:00 pm, we went to the neighboring munity to hand out leaflets, calling on people to save water. At around 3 o'clock, the expert made an excellent speech to us on the current water crisis. He talked about the drought and the severe shortage of water in the north?west of China. The speech had a strong appeal to all the students present. After that, we had a discussion with our neighbors about various ways of saving water in our daily life. I suggested turning off the tap immediately after using it, and a middle?aged woman came up with many ideas of reusing the water from kitchen.

Now, I have really had a better understanding of the importance of saving water.
